Who is the Bearded Buckeye?

Hey! I’m Phillip Toney, the owner and operator of “The Bearded Buckeye Custom Woodworking & Designs”!

I cannot thank you enough for checking out my website, and for considering me to complete your next project! But lets face it, you aren’t here to listen to me ramble on in appreciation. You’re here because you want to know “who, or what, the heck is the “Bearded Buckeye”?”.

Put quite simply, I, am the Bearded Buckeye. But why? Again, the answer is pretty simple; I have a beard, and I am from Ohio (The Buckeye State). However, I guess it is only fair that I give you a little more than that, huh? After all, you took the time to come to the website, and click on this tab, so I think you have more than earned some of the thought process behind the naming of my business, and why it exists to begin with.

As I mentioned, I was born and raised in Ohio; and resided there until I moved to Florida in 2013. Woodworking and putting ideas onto paper as designs had long been something I enjoyed, but life took me in other directions professionally. Along the way, though, I never lost that passion for woodworking. In fact, the love I had for it only grew stronger. After becoming a homeowner myself, I couldn’t get enough of designing and building custom pieces. Then, as it tends to go, friends requested help with items they wanted in their home. Then it spread to friends of friends. Eventually, I decided to make things more official, and brand my own business.

That meant I needed a business name, and I knew right away I wanted to pay homage to the place that had shaped and molded me into the man I am today. I knew I wanted the name to have something to do with Ohio. Quite frankly, the “bearded” part came from playing with different ideas, and I thought “Bearded Buckeye” had a nice ring to it. I had sported a beard of some fashion ever since I could grow one, and it was a recognizable feature of mine. It also, in my very biased opinion, made for some cool logo design possibilities, and, just as importantly, came off the tongue easily. While the full name became “The Bearded Buckeye Custom Woodworking & Designs”, it was here that the concept of the “Bearded Buckeye” was born.

While residing in Florida, I completed numerous projects in all areas of interior and outdoor living spaces, and learned so much about designing and building pieces I had never attempted. I started by building coffee tables and shelves, but had now flourished into designing whole rooms, large furniture pieces, and landscape/outdoor living spaces.. Honestly, I found myself enjoying every new challenge along the way. I also became more serious about the idea of owning my own business, and became just as passionate about that.

What started as a kid with a hobby in Ohio, and grew into a guy with a crazy dream in Florida, has now become a brand I am happy to have created, and more importantly, a brand I am happy to share with you here in Alaska! Thank you for being a part of the Bearded Buckeye Family!
